Cassandra Clare’s “Infernal Devices” series introduces us to two amazing literary heroes and has been the source of my latest literary crushes. There is much debate over these two fine heroes, and although most fans favor Will, there is no choosing “Team Will” or “Team Jem” for me. Like Tessa, I was confused about both of them throughout the two books. In the “Clockwork Angel” it was easy to find Jem so wonderful. He is sweet and kind and caring. It isn’t until “Clockwork Prince” that you realize why Will is the way he is and it just makes him even more endearing. Personally, if you ask me, Tessa doesn’t deserve either one of them! I truly can’t say that I prefer one over the other, I am swooning over both Will and Jem.
William “Will” Herondale
What does he look like? Will is extremely handsome. He has deep blue eyes and black hair that falls in his eyes. He has elegant features – high cheekbones; long, thick lashes; full lips and an elegant throat. He is muscular and well built with broad shoulders. He is 6 foot tall and has callused hands from his years of training as a Shadowhunter.
What Does he do? Will is a Nephilim, often referred to as Shadowhunters, from Wales. The Nephilim are humans with angel blood in their veins. The race of the Nephilim was created a thousand years ago, when the Angel Raziel shared his blood with the first Shadowhunter, Jonathan. The task he set for the race is to rid the world of demons and to maintain peace. They must obey the Clave (their system of government), as well as the laws given to them by the Angel Raziel that are found in the Grey Book.
Why him? There is so much to love about Will. Aside from his good looks, he is funny, sarcastic, and deep down inside he is caring. He keeps people at arms-length, but in CP, you find out why (don’t want to give too much away). Will is extremely well read and can quote extensively from books and poetry that he loves. He cares for his blood brother Jem more than anyone until he meets Tessa. His feelings for Tessa are difficult for him at first and he pushes her away by acting like a complete jerk. However as his love for her grows he seeks to resolve issues in his own life so that he could possibly have a chance with her.
What does he look like? Jem is being quite pale with bright silver colored hair, like an untarnished shilling. His eyes are said to be the same silver and he has a fine-boned angular face, with a slight curve of his eyes. He looks youthful, partially because of his slightness. He is also tall and very slender.
What does he do? Jem is also a Shadowhunter. He was born in Shanghai, China and is of Chinese and British descent. His father was an Englishman and his mother a Chinese woman. Jem is kind and gentle. He seems to be an unlikely Shadowhunter. However, he is a good fighter and extremely intelligent.
Why him? Jem is such a wonderful, kind, and loving person. He sees the good in people when others don’t, especially in Will who is his parabatai (blood brother). He also loves to play the violin. Jem is ill and slowly dying and never imagined that he could ever find love until he meets Tessa. He is so sweet and shy around her that you just can’t help but love him.
Favorite Will Quotes:
“This is about Tessa. I knew it was.”
Will flushed, a wash of color across the pallor of this face. “Not just her.”
“But you love her.”
Will stared at him. “Of course I do,” he said finally. “I had come to think i would never love anyone, but I love her.”
“We live and breathe words. It was books that kept me from taking my own life after I thought I could never love anyone, never be loved again. It was books that made me feel that perhaps I was not completely alone. They could be honest with me, and I with them.”
“He’s very pretty. For a human.”
“He’s very broken,” said Magnus. “Like a lovely vase that someone has smashed. Only luck and skill can put it back together the way it was before.”
Favorite Jem Quotes:
“His beauty did not blaze like Will’s did in fierce colors and repressed fire, but it had its own muted perfection, the loveliness of snow falling against a silver gray sky.”
“Will has always been the brighter burning star, the one to catch attention — but Jem is a steady flame, unwavering and honest.”
“He touched her as he usually touched his beloved violin, with a soft and urgent grace that left her breathless.”
Being Jem, Tessa reflected, must be a great deal like being the owner of a thoroughbred dog that liked to bite your guests. You had to have a hand on his (Will’s) collar constantly.
