Most of the time, Sandie and I discuss the books we’re reading with each other. So it was quite a surprise, one day last year, when we discovered that we were both reading “Daughter of Smoke and Bone”. What’s even funnier is that a couple of days later we both finished the book within minutes of each other. We both loved it and couldn’t stop talking about Akiva and Karou. All of the characters is this book are amazing! Obviously, Akiva and Karou are fan favorites, but I also loved Zuzana, Karou’s best friend. She is one of the characters that got me thinking about the importance of best friends in teen literature. Without Zuzana, Karou couldn’t have endured and continued on her quest to discover the truth about herself.
Age: About 17
What She’s Like: Zuzana is a Czech native, from a long line of marionette artisans. She had puppets in her blood and was carrying on with the family tradition of puppetry. She worked as an assistant to puppeteers on the weekends. Zuzana is tiny, to the point of feeling that she is “child-size”. Karou calls her “marionette-size”. She only passed five feet in her platform boots. Despite her size, Zuzana is very bossy. She is also a master of the eyebrow arch; she could do both eyebrows perfectly. She also has beautiful, dark Slavic eyes. She is a beautiful, tiny force to be dealt with.
Why Her? Zuzana is Karou’s best friend. They are both students at an art school in Prague. She is the one person that Karou desperately wants to keep as part of her life. She needs her as her anchor to a “normal” life. Zuzana supports Karou when she breaks up with her idiotic boyfriend Kaz. She is also accepting of the strange disappearances in Karou’s life and learns not to question her about them. Even though Karou shares about the creatures in her life, everyone, including Zuzana, believes that they are part of her imagination.
Despite the fact that Karou’s secret life is bizarre and hard to believe, Zuzana finally accepts the whole story after she actually sees one of the creatures from Karou’s supposedly imaginary life. It is at that point that Karou needs Zuzana’s support, friendship and love more than ever before. Zuzana is compeltely there for her in every way that a friend could be. When she meets Akiva, Zuzana already knows that he is in love with Karou and she tries to convince her of that fact.
Karou loves Zuzana and it’s obvious why. Zuzana is tough, funny and completely devoted and loyal to Karou. With a friend like her, Karou can withstand the extraordinary parts of her life.
Favorite Zuzana Quotes:
She thought Zuzana’s tininess was perfect. Like a fairy you found in the woods and wanted to put in your pocket. Though in Zuzana’s case the fairy was likely to be rabid and BITE.”
Hey! My body may be small, but my soul is large. It’s why I wear platforms. So I can reach the top of my soul.
“I hate tights.” ” Well, let me add them to the list. This morning you hate, let me see, men in hats, wiener dogs-” “Wiener dog OWNERS,” Zuzana corrected. “You’d have to have, like LENTIL for a soul to hate wiener dogs.”
“Because how fun right?” Zuzana had rubbed her hands together in mock glee. “Oh, boy the Apocalypse!
“Ask him if he’s in love with you,” said Zuzana at once. Karou almost choked. She turned her whole body in her chair to face Zuzana, who held up a hand before she could protest. “I know, I know. You’re not going to ask him that. And you don’t even need to. He so is. Look at him! I’m afraid he’s going to set you on fire with his crazy orange eyes.”
