Today is a day of reflection. As a New Yorker who, along with the rest of the world, experienced tremendous sadness 11 years ago this morning, I think it’s important to think about not only the profound tragedy of that day but the way in which it made all New Yorkers, all Americans, consider our connections to each other. Literature transcends political and religious affiliations. It rises above what separates us from each other and forges a bond between reader and writer, between readers and other readers. It’s with that idea in mind that we celebrate what this community has meant to us. We hope you won’t think it’s disrespectful for us to do so today.
One year ago, Diana and I started this blog with the hopes of engaging a group of young and adult readers in teen literature via a monthly book club. We never imagined what a joy the site would become for us to maintain, and how many wonderful fellow lovers of Young Adult we’d encounter from the simple act of sharing our thoughts about our favorite books, authors and characters.
So, without further ado: Thank you, thank you, thank you… for reading and recommending and commenting and tweeting and making us fall in love again and again with everyone from Melina Marchetta (Jonah “Effing” Griggs!) to Stephanie Perkins (aw, Cricket!) to that rockstar John Green.
As a thank you for reading along with us this past year (we know there are thousands of YA blogs, so we appreciate each reader who has stopped by!), we’re going to pick five lucky winners to receive any of the following books, a collection of our (or our contributors’) favorites which we’ve highlighted in some way in the past year:
“Between Shades of Gray” by Ruta Sepetys
“Daughter of Smoke and Bone” by Laini Taylor
“Divergent” by Veronica Roth
“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green
“Finnikin of the Rock” by Melina Marchetta
