This weekend has been full of tears. The Connecticut school shooting rendered my husband and me a weeping mess this weekend. At one point, my husband was on the verge of crying from that Sleepy’s mattress commercial that features “In My Life.” My older two kids had a scheduled sleepover after attending a children’s ministry Christmas party, so we actually slept with our “baby” (who’s actually 4-and-a-half) between us. We had gone to see the touring production of “Les Miserables” and ugly cried through “Little People” and “Bring Him Home”!
We also spent the weekend focusing on our children. We baked cookies together (snickerdoodles!); played an elaborate game my daughter made up that seemed like “The Bachelorette” meets “The Dating Game” (neither of which she’s ever watched) with her stuffed animals; attended our church’s cookies and carols party; competed on the Wii; and watched “The Muppets Christmas Carol.”
I’m sure all of you have felt the same way since the news broke on Friday morning. I don’t know about all of you, but I did absolutely no reading this weekend and am not motivated AT ALL to read any of the richly plotted, heavy books on my TBR pile. I just can’t do it. I need to read something breezy and light (and funny and romantic). I was thinking “Take a Bow,” which I was sent earlier in the year but never read, but I’m open to anything.
What was your favorite funny and sweet read of the year? Maybe that kind of book will help with my unshakeable sadness.
