Sandie and I love reading a book and realizing both of us have developed a literary crush on the same character. It seems like proof of our sisterly bond that despite being 12 years apart, we have similar tastes in our fictional boyfriends. We’ve had hour-long conversations (just ask our husbands) talking about books, and a lot of those convos are recaps of why characters like Levi, Park, Jonah, Joe, Will, Jem, Ron, etc. are so amazing. Unfortunately, it’s been a long time since we both found a character worthy of our sisterly
adoration admiration. Thank goodness for Rainbow Rowell for creating Levi, and both of us fell for him so hard we have compared every male character since to him! Levi (like Rainbow Rowell’s beloved Park) is the kind of character that makes you smile and wish you were in college all over again.
What does he look like? Levi is tall, thin, and tan. He has blue eyes and dark blond hair flopping in every direction. He has the “smilingest” face Cath has ever seen. He smiles all the way from his chin to his receding hairline. His hairline comes to a peak on his forehead, then retreats. Levi sweeps his hair straight up and back in a sloppy blond wave.
Whast does he do? Levi is an Ag student majoring in Range Management at the University of Nebraska. He also has a part-time job as a barista at Starbucks.
Who does he love? Cather “Cath” Avery
Why him? Levi is… Levi. The name itself should connote everything that a guy should be: He smiles all the time and is eternally optimistic. One of Levi’s best features (besides his fantastically flippy hair) is his blinding smile. As Rowell describes, his smile is a living thing that broke free and devoured his whole face, and then it devoured Cath’s too. He is a true friend (look at how he treats his ex Reagan!) that will help you make your bed, walk you home from a late-night study session, fix you a much-needed syrupy latte, and drop everything to give you a ride. The story is full of examples of Levi’s genuine kindness.
We’re so used to these cocky, borderline jerky guys with six packs and secret vulnerabilities, but Levi is the real deal. When Cath’s twin sister Wren is in trouble at a bar, Cath calls Levi, who immediately comes to the rescue. When Cath got a phone call that her father was in a hospital in Omaha, she knew she could without fail count on Levi to help. He’s the guy who talks to everyone in a room and seems to be genuinely interested in what everyone has to say — because he really is; he’s not faking it. And his authenticity is what we loved best.
As I read about Levi, I made a silent prayer for my daughter to meet someone like him when she starts university next year; I want her to find her own Levi — a guy who is that supportive, loving, and talented at making the girl he loves smile and feel safe.
Swoon Worthy Quotes:
“I choose you over everyone.”
Cath ate the banana and held on to his gaze. “I’d give you the moon right now,” she said.
Levi’s eyes flashed happily, and he hitched up an eyebrow. “Yeah, but would you slay it for me?”
“I miss you.”
“That’s stupid,” she said. “I saw you this morning.”
“It’s not the time,” Levi said, and she could hear that he was smiling.” It’s the distance.”
