Name: Tobias Eaton aka Four
What does he look like? Four has short, dark brown hair and deep-set, intensely blue eyes, so dark they are almost black. Veronica Roth loves to describe his eyes, explaining they have a small patch of lighter blue on the left corner. He doesn’t have a perfectly smooth face, because he’s Dauntless! He has a scar on his chin. He is more than 6-feet tall and very muscular. Four, as is the custom with the Dauntless, is seriously inked: he has a patch of Dauntless flames on the right side of his chest and the symbols of each faction on his back: Dauntless (top of his spine), Abnegation below it, the other three smaller below them (Candor scales, Erudite eye, and Amity tree). For your
ogling observation, we’ve included a poster of the Theo James/Four poster from the upcoming adaptation.
What does he do? Four instructs the Dauntless “transfers” from other Factions (he also does other stuff, but you have to read to find out what!).
Who does he love? Beatrice Prior aka Tris
Why him? Four, like Tris, is an Abnegation transfer to Dauntless, so he has a strong foundation in selflessness before he chose to indulge his risk-taking courageous side. He quickly earns himself a reputation at Dauntless but isn’t interested in glory or becoming one of the leaders. He enjoys being the instructor for Dauntless transfers, because he knows it what it was like to be thrown into a new Faction without a single face of friendship or recognition.
At first, Four is a cipher. He’s so enigmatic, Tris can’t stop
obsessing thinking about him and wondering about his past. He seems like he could be a bad boy, but he’s really not (despite the tats and the brooding intensity). He’s actually one of the sweetest, most supportive love interests in YA. Yes he has darkness and pain in his past, but that just adds a vulnerability to him that he really only shares with Tris. Of course, just because he’s vulnerable doesn’t mean he can’t beat the tar out of anyone who tries to hurt someone he loves. That’s what makes him so amazing: he’s tough, vulnerable and ridiculously smart. He knows Tris is exceptional and supports her. So of course he’s worthy of a literary crush!
Swoon Worthy Quotes:
“I have something I need to tell you,” he says. I run my fingers along the tendons in his hands and look back at him. “I might be in love with you.” He smiles a little. “I’m waiting until I’m sure to tell you, though.”
“That’s sensible of you,” I say, smiling too. “We should find some paper so you can make a list or a chart or something.”
I feel his laughter against my side, his nose sliding along my jaw, his lips pressing my ear.
“Maybe I’m already sure,” he says, “and I just don’t want to frighten you.”
I laugh a little. “Then you should know better.”
“Fine,” he says. “Then I love you.”
“He turns toward me. I want to touch him, but I’m afraid of his bareness; afraid that he will make me bare too.
‘Is this scaring you, Tris?’
‘No,’ I croak. I clear my throat. ‘Not really. I’m only…afraid of what I want.’
‘What do you want?’ Then his face tightens. ‘Me?’
Slowly I nod.”
“He slides his hand over my cheek, one finger anchored behind my ear. Then he tilts his head down and kisses me, sending a warm ache through my body. I wrap my hands around his arm, holding him there as long as I can. When he touches me, the hollowed-out feeling in my chest and stomach is not as noticeable.”
“His hands skim my bare arms. “Just bounce a little when you walk,” he says, kissing my forehead, “and pretend you’re afraid of their guns” —another kiss between my eyebrows— “and act like the shrinking violet you could never be ”—a kiss on my cheek— “and you’ll be fine.”
“He doesn’t speak for a long time, until I am quiet again.
“Sleep,” he says. “I’ll fight the bad dreams off if they come to get you.”
“My bare hands, obviously.”
