Here is a gallery of our first year of “Selective Collective” books:
It’s tough to narrow down our list of favorites from among our SC books, but in the end, here are our top three picks:
1. “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell: When Sandie and I each read “Eleanor & Park we quickly became Rainbow Rowell fans. What’s not to love in a book with two flawed teenagers who find each other and bring out the best in one another? –Diana
2. “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell: I think it’s safe to say that the Selective Collective bloggers are all extremely fangirlish about our love of Rainbow Rowell. But c’mon, could there be a more perfect book for us? Sisters: check; Happy, loving, swoon-worthy boy: check; “Harry Potter” homage: check! We feel lucky to say that we were Rainbow fans even before “Eleanor & Park” even came out! That’s like saying you followed John Green after reading an ARC of “Looking for Alaska”! –Sandie
3. “The Book of Broken Hearts” by Sarah Ockler: There was so much to love in this book. We particularly loved the fact that it revolved around two very different Latino families. Sandie and I also enjoyed the complicated relationships between the sisters and the sweet way that the protagonist bonded with her Papi. Then there was gear-head hottie Emilio Vargas… what a great book! –Diana
To celebrate our first year as a Collective, each blog is giving away Selective Collective titles. For our giveaway, we’re offering you a chance to win a finished copy of “Eleanor & Park” (of course!) OR “The Book of Broken Hearts,” OR an early read of ours, “The Murmurings.”
And if you want more chances to win books, enter all five of our giveaways this week!

I would love to read them all, but Fangirl looks great.
FANGIRL is great. Such an amazing writer Rainbow Rowell is!
Sending this list to my teenage daughters now. Always looking for good books to add to their Christmas list!
So happy you mentioned holiday lists; we’re doing a special gift guide in late November, so stay tuned!
Rainbow Rowell is definitely my favorite author of this year. All three of her books are just excellent. I recently discovered this feature and I have made it a point to read all the posts about Fangirl and E&P.
I know! Lucy at The Reading Date just made her Waiting on Wednesday LANDLINE, because really, how could anyone NOT want to read any of her books.
Happy birthday to us!!!! So happy to be a part of this with you ladies! 🙂
It’s been such a great community to be a part of this past year. Love you ladies!
What an awesome giveaway, Sandie! Congrats on a great year of SC! You sure chose some awesome books to feature. My daughter just read E&P and loved it. Can’t go wrong with RR! I’d love to give The Murmurings a try sometime. It looks like a good spooky one.
I’m so glad your daughter loved it! I pray for my sons (who are also half Asian) to be like Park in so many ways. Except for maybe the guyliner 😉
This has been such a great year! I love the gallery you put together. We’ve read some good ones. 🙂
We have read a lot of books we wouldn’t otherwise have tried! Feel lucky that you brought us all together!
I loved E & P, but I’ve also been hearing some great things about The Book of Broken Hearts!
I’ve read BOTH Fangirl and Eleanor & Park, though I must admit Park still is my favorite character. (I even have a “SIGNED” copy of Eleanor & Park, which I like to brag about. ;D)
I’ve actually really been curious about The Book of Broken Hearts-I heard about it back in April, but never got the chance to nab it. I also haven’t seen many reviews and discussions on it, so it makes me even more intrigued!!
Happy birthday!! Eleanor & Park is on my must-read list!
Book of Broken Hearts
I want to read Eleanor and Park. John Green recommended it! ^_^
I really want to read Eleanor and Park. I just finished Fangirl and absolutely loved it so I’m excited to try something else by the same author.
