Happy Birthday to The Selective Collective (and Giveaway)!

October 30, 2013 by Diana 19 Comments

Selective Collective Giveaway
This week we’re celebrating our first anniversary as part of “The Selective Collective” with our fellow book bloggers and good friends at The Book Addict’s Guide, Gone Pecan, The Grown-Up YA, and YA Crush. Through our monthly collaboration, we’ve read a bunch of great books, discovered and interviewed some amazing authors, and had countless hilarious and thought-provoking and memorable email conversations, texts, and phone conversations.

Here is a gallery of our first year of “Selective Collective” books:

It’s tough to narrow down our list of favorites from among our SC books, but in the end, here are our top three picks:

1. “Eleanor & Park” by Rainbow Rowell: When Sandie and I each read “Eleanor & Park we quickly became Rainbow Rowell fans.  What’s not to love in a book with two flawed teenagers who find each other and bring out the best in one another? –Diana

2. “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell:  I think it’s safe to say that the Selective Collective bloggers are all extremely fangirlish about our love of Rainbow Rowell. But c’mon, could there be a more perfect book for us? Sisters: check; Happy, loving, swoon-worthy boy: check; “Harry Potter” homage: check! We feel lucky to say that we were Rainbow fans even before “Eleanor & Park” even came out! That’s like saying you followed John Green after reading an ARC of “Looking for Alaska”! –Sandie

3. “The Book of Broken Hearts” by Sarah Ockler: There was so much to love in this book. We particularly loved the fact that it revolved around two very different Latino families. Sandie and I also enjoyed the complicated relationships between the sisters and the sweet way that the protagonist bonded with her Papi. Then there was gear-head hottie Emilio Vargas… what a great book! –Diana

To celebrate our first year as a Collective, each blog is giving away Selective Collective titles. For our giveaway, we’re offering you a chance to win a finished copy of “Eleanor & Park” (of course!) OR “The Book of Broken Hearts,” OR an early read of ours, “The Murmurings.”

Rainbow Rowell is definitely my favorite author of this year. All three of her books are just excellent. I recently discovered this feature and I have made it a point to read all the posts about Fangirl and E&P.

What an awesome giveaway, Sandie! Congrats on a great year of SC! You sure chose some awesome books to feature. My daughter just read E&P and loved it. Can’t go wrong with RR! I’d love to give The Murmurings a try sometime. It looks like a good spooky one.

I’m so glad your daughter loved it! I pray for my sons (who are also half Asian) to be like Park in so many ways. Except for maybe the guyliner 😉

I loved E & P, but I’ve also been hearing some great things about The Book of Broken Hearts!

I’ve read BOTH Fangirl and Eleanor & Park, though I must admit Park still is my favorite character. (I even have a “SIGNED” copy of Eleanor & Park, which I like to brag about. ;D)

I’ve actually really been curious about The Book of Broken Hearts-I heard about it back in April, but never got the chance to nab it. I also haven’t seen many reviews and discussions on it, so it makes me even more intrigued!!

I really want to read Eleanor and Park. I just finished Fangirl and absolutely loved it so I’m excited to try something else by the same author.
