Driving to YALLFest: Pick My Audio Book

November 6, 2013 by Sandie 6 Comments

YALLFest
I’m heading to YALLFest on Thursday night/Friday morning and need a good audiobook to keep me alert and entertained on my way down. It’s an 8-hour drive, y’all, and I’m doing it solo. Diana and her 18-year-old daughter will be driving at the same time (except in the opposite direction) to meet in beautiful Charleston.

Normally I would fly, but I waited too long and the tickets got ridiculously expensive, so it’s cheaper for me to drive halfway, spend the night, and then finish the roadtrip on Friday and then repeat the process Sunday than to fly. I’m not fond of solo roadtrips, but I’m doing it anyhow, because I have stories dependent on the trip, and because I love being able to see my sister and niece outside of the regular holiday reunion setting.

I’m also excited to meet some of my favorite authors (Rainbow Rowell!), even if it’s for a minute as I’m getting books signed. Last year, Diana and I met several wonderful authors, I got some great interviews in, and Diana and her daughter even stumbled upon Stephanie Perkins walking around and took this great photo with her:

Stephanie Perkins
So yeah, I need audio book suggestions. Recommend something you think I’ll love, please! I’ve only listened to one audiobook ever and it was “Gone Girl” by Gillian Flynn. So I’m open to anything, really!

Have you read And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini yet? One of my favs this year. Surely you’ve read The Book Thief by Zusak, right? How about the Games of Thrones series? That would get you through an epic drive and they are actually great stories with characters and story lines you never see in the HBO show. πŸ™‚ Have a great trip!!!

I haven’t read the Hosseini, but everyone seems to love it! Yes I’ve read The Book Thief

Rainbow Rowell! So jealous! Anyway, as for audiobooks, I’m not sure what you would like but I loved

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga
Mothership by Martin Leicht & Isla Neal
Doll Bones by Holly Black (this is middle-grade).

    Have fun!!!

I’ve heard great things about The Scorpio Races audiobook, but it’s already one of my favorite books. I’m going to check out the others! Thanks for the recommendations!

How fun! I would love to go to YallFest sometime and see all those great authors in one place.

Have you listened to Rainbow Rowell’s books? The E&P and Fangirl audios are quite good.
Other YA suggestions are Proxy, Just One Day/Year, or something narrated by Emma Galvin. She’s the best!

Literary Fiction suggestions: Reconstructing Amelia and Me Before You

Have a safe and fun trip πŸ™‚
