Now that “The Fault in Our Stars” is finally in theaters and most of us have already seen it (if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?), it’s time to start getting revved up for some of the other YA movies that are coming out this summer. The next one that I’m highly anticipating is the upcoming movie of Gayle Forman’s popular book, “If I Stay.” Just like there were certain scenes from “The Fault in Our Stars” that I couldn’t wait to see, there are parts of “If I Stay” (in theaters Aug. 22) that I am eagerly awaiting to see.
2. Mia dressing up as a “punk rocker” to impress Adam – I love it that Mia is this incredibly gifted musician who in my mind should also be a confident person. However, when it comes to Adam and his music world, she feels unsure of herself. So for Halloween she decides to dress up as a punk rocker because she thinks that’s the kind of girl he really wants. With a lot of help from her mother she transforms herself. She quickly finds out though, that Adam loves her just the way she is and she doesn’t need to change herself for him. I believe I saw a little part of this in the trailer and am really looking forward to it.
3. Adam and Mia on their first date at a Yo-Yo Ma concert – I love this part. Adam knows that Mia is a cellist and he tells her that he got some tickets to a Yo-Yo Ma concert and wonders if she’d like to go with him. There was so much about that scene that I love. I can’t wait to see the suit that he wears and I’m looking forward to hearing the music. I don’t know if they’re still going to a Yo-Yo Ma concert in the movie, but I hope they do go to see a famous cellist.
4. Mia’s parents – They are probably two of the coolest parents in all of YA literature. It was so amazing to watch through flashbacks how her parents changed from punk rockers to hipster parents. They are so supportive of Mia despite the fact that they know nothing about classical music and even less about the cello. It didn’t matter to them. They loved Mia’s passion for music and encouraged her at every step, from finding the best teachers for her, going to her recitals and listening to her practice.
5. Kim and Adam trying to sneak into ICU at the hospital – The lengths that Adam and Kim go through to try to see Mia in ICU are incredible. They feel desperate to see her, but they don’t want to bother Mia’s grandparents and relatives with their request. So they come up with elaborate schemes so they can talk to her and be close to her. You gotta love a boyfriend and best friend like that. They believe that she might be dying and they want those precious final moments with her and won’t let anyone or anything stop them.
There are so many parts of this book that I’m looking forward to. These are just the five that I narrowed it down to. So what are you most looking forward to seeing when the movie comes out?
