This month our Selective Collective book is “On the Fence” by Kasie West. Diana and I both loved it. It’s so refreshing to read a book about a strong, athletic girl who loves her brothers and hangs out like just one of the guys. An empowering story line about finding someone who loves you for who you are, not who you’re pretending to be, “On the Fence” is a lovely little romance that’s got a lot of great messages for young and adult readers.
She’s a tomboy. He’s the boy next door…
Charlie Reynolds can outrun, outscore, and outwit every boy she knows. But when it comes to being a girl, Charlie doesn’t know the first thing about anything. So when she starts working at a chichi boutique to pay off a speeding ticket, she finds herself in a strange new world. To cope with the stress of her new reality, Charlie takes to spending nights chatting with her neighbor Braden through the fence between their yards. As she grows to depend on their nightly Fence Chats, she realizes she’s got a bigger problem than speeding tickets-she’s falling for Braden. She knows what it means to go for the win, but if spilling her secret means losing him for good, the stakes just got too high.
Fun, original, and endearing, On the Fence is a romantic comedy about finding yourself and finding love where you least expect.
We both think “On the Fence” would make an adorable teen rom-com. We weren’t too caught up in trying to match the actors with the exact descriptions in the book, but we did go for height. It’s easy for tall girls to think they’re not “cute” or “girlish” like their more petite counterparts. Although Liana Liberato is a bit too thin for the role, we think she could gain 10-15 pounds fore a more athletic look (and she looks beautiful with or without makeup!). As for Shane Harper, he’s tall and looks like the cute boy next door type. I am keeping fingers crossed that the book gets optioned, because it would be such a fun and sweet movie.
