Monday Quotes: YA Books Set Deep in the Heart of Texas

November 10, 2014 by Sandie 1 Comment

We’ve been doing Monday Quotes for a while now and would love to know if anyone else wants to join in the fun, if we provided themes or prompts? We’ve gotten a couple of emails about it but have always just considered it a TLR feature. But if you are looking for an occasional and easy-to-research book meme to add to your edit calendar, we’d be open to making this a shareable, linkable feature. Let us know via email or in the comments!

YA Quotes Set in Texas
Today, because I just returned from a four-day trip to San Antonio where I interviewed director Gina Prince-Bythewood about her upcoming movie “Beyond The Lights,” I’ve picked quotes from YA books set in (or featuring) Texas.

“Aristotle & Dante Discover The Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Saenz

And it seemed to me that Dante’s face was a map of the world. A world without any darkness.
Wow, a world without darkness. How beautiful was that?

“In Honor” by Jessi Kirbi

Suspended as we were, with no horizon line or landscape or anything else to draw a separation between the water and the sky, I pictured us up there with the stars. Another story written in tiny lights. We were a constellation put in the sky– two people holding hands, floating peacefully above everything else, in a beautiful, perfect moment.

“Shattered Souls” by Mary Lindsey

He rolled me under him to kiss me. It wasn’t a gentle kiss like at the beach, or passionate kiss like the one that happened in his room. It was desperate. Desperate and hungry and sad.
A good-bye kiss.

“Texas Gothic” by Rosemary Clement-Moore

I wasn’t worried about myself. I didn’t consider the possibility that either of the men could catch me. I was all-star varsity soccer. I was Braveheart in Urban Outfitters. I was Supergirl.
I was seriously delusional.

“Under the Mesquite” by Guadalupe Garcia McCall

Being Mexican
means more than that.
It means being there for each other.
It’s togetherness, like a familia.
We should be helping one another,
cheering our friends on, not trying
to bring them down.

Next week, since the National Book Award winners will be announced, we’re curating quotes from past finalists for the Young People’s Literature Award. Check out past finalists and winners and pick quotes if you want to join us on Monday!
